In a groundbreaking announcement at the 2024 Halo World Championship, Microsoft’s 343 Industries unveiled a transformative shift for the beloved Halo series. The studio has officially rebranded as Halo Studios and adopted Unreal Engine 5 as the engine for all future Halo games.
Halo Studios to Use Unreal Engine 5 for Future Halo Games
For years, Halo games were powered by 343’s proprietary Slipspace Engine. However, as gaming has evolved, so have the demands of players, and the studio found it increasingly difficult to keep up. Moving to Unreal Engine 5 allows Halo Studios to develop new games more efficiently, reduce development timelines, and expand the series in ways previously impossible.
Studio Art Director Chris Matthews emphasized the importance of the transition: “Nanite and Lumen, Unreal’s advanced rendering and lighting technologies, will allow us to create immersive worlds and experiences like never before.” Additionally, adopting Unreal makes it easier to recruit new talent, as the engine is widely used in the gaming industry.
While Halo Infinite will continue to receive updates through its existing Slipspace Engine, the future of Halo lies in Unreal Engine 5. The studio has confirmed that multiple new games are currently in development, though details remain under wraps.
One of the most talked-about aspects of the announcement was Project Foundry, a research initiative within Halo Studios designed to explore the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. While not a new game in itself, Project Foundry serves as a proof of concept, demonstrating how future Halo titles might look and feel. According to the studio, the visuals and gameplay elements seen in Foundry are expected to carry over into upcoming projects.
