Sony Unveils PlayStation 5 Pro: Enhanced Performance, Ray Tracing, and Backward Compatibility

Sony has announced the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro), the latest and most advanced addition to the PlayStation family. This new console, revealed in a technical presentation led by Mark Cerny, promises significant upgrades over the original PS5. Here is all you need to know about the console.

PlayStation 5 Pro: Key Features and Enhancements

The PS5 Pro introduces several major improvements:

  • Upgraded GPU: With 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the original PS5, the PS5 Pro delivers up to 45% faster rendering, resulting in a smoother gameplay experience.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: The enhanced ray tracing capabilities offer dynamic reflections and light refractions at double or even triple the speed of the original PS5, creating a more immersive environment.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses AI to provide razor-sharp image clarity and extraordinary detail.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro supports backward compatibility with over 8,500 PS4 games through the new PS5 Pro Game Boost, improving their performance. It also features the latest wireless technology with Wi-Fi 7, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K gaming support.

Enhanced Game Library

 

Several blockbuster titles will be updated to leverage the PS5 Pro’s advanced hardware, including:

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Games optimized for the PS5 Pro will be marked with a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.

Design and Compatibility

The PS5 Pro maintains the familiar design of the PS5 but with enhanced specifications. It retains the same height and width, ensuring compatibility with existing accessories such as the PlayStation VR2, DualSense Edge, and Pulse Elite headsets. The console will be available as a disc-less model, with an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive sold separately.

Price and Availability

The PS5 Pro will be available globally on November 7, 2024, with preorders starting September 26, 2024. Pricing is as follows:

  • $699.99 USD
  • £699.99 GBP
  • €799.99 EUR
  • Â¥119,980 JPY

Each purchase includes a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom. Note that availability in India might be slightly delayed compared to other regions.
