About Fortnite

Fortnite, a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Epic Games, boasts a player base exceeding 350 million globally, with the CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, playing a pivotal role in its development.

Launched officially in 2017, Fortnite gained global acclaim, with critics attributing its widespread success to its free-to-play model and cross-platform availability on PCs, Androids, and consoles. While these factors undoubtedly contributed to the game’s popularity, delving into its history reveals additional elements that played a crucial role.

The early-stage

Epic Games teased Fortnite way back in 2011 at the Spike videogame awards. It took inspiration from titles like Minecraft and Gears of War. They describe it as “a world where you can build and survive”. In 2013, it was developed for Unreal Engine 4, and in 2015, a closed beta was launched for approximately 50,000 players.

Tim Sweeney had different plans for the game. Rather than making high-realistic graphics, they chose to add a cartoonish vibe as he wanted people to play it as soon as it was released. It was a good decision for epic games because it saved them from the time-consuming work that would go into creating a high-graphics game, which would also be difficult to play for most people because their PC was not capable of running it properly.

When Was Fortnite Released?

In July of 2017, Fortnite’s early access was released for PC, Mac, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. In September 2017, it was officially released. The Fortnite iOS version was released in 2018, and in August 2018 a beta version was released for some Android Samsung phones.

There’s still no confirmation of when the game will be released for Android users. According to the statement given by Tim Sweeney to Variety, he was not happy with Google’s policies on store tax.

Tim is looking forward to working with Google as Google has created an open market for Android and he wants players to download the game safely directly from the Play Store. You can find more here.

Disputes surrounded by Fortnite

It is natural for a game this big to always be surrounded by controversy, as it is sometimes a clever tactic used by marketers to keep their name alive in the crowd. It doesn’t matter if they hate you if they all say your name.

When the game released the battle royale mode, it was bombarded with reviews saying it was a copy of PUBG (Player Unknown’s Battleground). The makers of PUBG also took some interest in it and filed a lawsuit against the Epic Games, but later took it down without any explanation.

Fortnite has been egregious for using the dance emo switch they don’t own. In December 2018, rapper 2 Milly filed a lawsuit against Epic Games for the offing of his “Milly Rock” dance.

Epic went beyond banning but also got the law involved against two players who were found to be cheating. One of them was a minor who’d been using hacks to take down Twitch streamers and was uploading them on YouTube.
